What Is Causing The Rise In Popularity Of Jeeps?

Selecting a vehicle is a very personal choice, and this year it is becoming clear that more and more consumers prefer a 4×4 like the Jeep. Chrysler Jeep service dealers discussed this concept with manufacturing officials recently at a conference in Orlando, Florida. The popularity of models such as the Wrangler or the Liberty is raising concern about keeping these units in stock this season. The obvious question is why the sudden burst in demand. After all, Jeeps are not new to the automotive marketplace.
What Is Causing The Rise In Popularity Of Jeeps
The Facts
When you look at the statistics, it is clear that people are buying more Jeeps. Chrysler reports a drastic increase in sales over the last few years. For instances, in 2007, the Wrangler sold 119,243 units in the United States. In 2012, they topped out at 141,669. In Canada, the sales have doubled since 2007. Overall, Jeep sales show a 16 percent increase between 2011 and 2012.

Iconic Appeal
Businessweek lists the Jeep as one of the 25 most iconic cars in the past 20 years. The first generation Wrangler came out in the late 1980s with it signature box style and roll cage. Since that first model came off the assembly line, Jeep has produced different versions of that same look. The Wrangler Island was introduced to the market in 1988 and the Renegade in 1991.

In 2010, the designers at Jeep gave the Wrangler a face-lift that may account for some of the change. The improvements included an easy to fold top, the addition of UConnect technology and enhanced sun visors for better visibility. The new versions maintain that same boxy structure that has made the Wrangler a success.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has also gotten a new look that includes some features from the Mercedes M-Class SUV. That boost in suave styling has increased the price but that isn’t dampening sales. Jeep reports the demand for this model is so great that units are selling for more than the MSRP.

Engine Design
What is under the hood in the new generation model excites both Chrysler Jeep service stores and consumers. The manufacturing is adding their new V-6 engine known as the Pentastar to the 2012 units. The motor boasts 285 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. That added punch is improving fuel economy, as well. The U.S. Department of Energy is reporting the 2012 Jeep Wrangler 4WD rates 18 mpg.

Sales for Jeeps models like the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee are definitely on the rise. This is good news for the American economy, as Chrysler will answer the need for more units by increasing production and creating more work in the process.
