Water that leaks into a basement can come from many sources. This includes problems that can occur inside and outside the home. If you have a wet basement, then a few steps can be followed to keep it dry.
Test for Water Leakage
Drying our a wet basement should not be done until you determine the source of the water. One way to do this is to attach plastic wrap to a discolored part of your home’s foundation with masking tape. Leave the plastic in place for a couple of hours. If there is moisture on the inside of the plastic, then there is a problem outside the house. Outside problems can be traced to gutters and the grading around the home.
Check the Gutters
The gutters around the roof of your home need to be periodically cleaned to remove debris. The failure to clean the gutters can lead to water cascading over the edge instead of going to the downspout. If you do not properly divert water away from your home, then it can seep into the ground. The best way to divert water is to attach an extension to the downspout. Downspout extensions need to be three to four feet to keep water away from the foundation.
Improve the Grade
The improper grading of soil around your home causes water to flow back towards the foundation. The soil around your home needs to be sloped to drain water towards the yard. This can easily be done with soil and a rake. Add the soil around the perimeter of your home and create the proper slope with a metal rake.
Foundation Cracks
Cracks in the foundation of your home can allow water to seep inside. This includes hairline cracks and any large noticeable cracks. Cracks in your foundation will require patching with cement. A chisel will need to be used to open the crack. You then need to remove any loose concrete and other debris. Mix cement in a bucket and apply it to the crack on the foundation by using a trowel. Two coats are needed to ensure a match with the existing surface. Cracks can be repaired on the inside or the outside of the foundation.
Seal Out Moisture
The inside of a basement can be sealed from moisture by using a primer or paint. There are many types of primer that can be used to seal a porous foundation. Primer can be applied with a brush or a roller. A can of cement sealing primer, a paint brush, or a roller can be found at a home improvement store. You can also use a water-proof paint if you want to have a different color on the walls.
Preventing Moisture
The build up of moisture in a basement is common in many homes. The best way to prevent excessive moisture is to use a dehumidifier. If you see that there is standing water in your basement, then look for signs of a leak. You may have water backing up from a drain or some other area.
