It is important for students to study effectively despite their struggles with learning materials. Eventually, students can get incredibly tired and they feel that they are no longer able to absorb more information. It is easy to notice if we have hit the storage limit and there’s something that we need to do about it. When a computer runs too many programs, it could become slower due to the lack of resources. Things can be harder if our brain feels like an overloaded hard drive and there’s hardly extra space for additional files. In this situation, we should know what to do and rejuvenate our mind. The first thing to do is to assess our sleep quality. It is possible that we lack enough sleep. Highly active students should sleep about 8 hours each day. It is important that students get enough sleep each day, so they will be able to soak more information during the day. Lack of sleep could affect our short-term memory and if we are fully rested, the information will be transferred into the long-term storage. Our goal is to make sure that more information is included in the long-term storage.
Long term memory doesn’t guarantee that we will an information forever, but it is much easier for us to understand a subject. Memory performance can be enhanced over time if we are willing to do repetition. In fact, a foreign and unfamiliar idea could become easier to understand through constant repetition. Without repetition, ideas could simply float inside our mind and we will lack proper understanding. Lack of sleep could make us to feel mentally unhealthy and we won’t be able to study further. In fact, many students find that just a 15-minute nap is very refreshing and we will be able to continue studying. Sleep allows us to organize mental clutter and more information will sink in. Learning performance is more about having fresh mind, poor body stamina could also have an effect. It may sound counter-intuitive that a quick jogging session will make us memorize easier, because we will get tired. However, we could find that after a proper physical exercise, having healthy meal and having enough rest, we will be able to learn more easily.
Learning performance can be enhanced if we write what we are learning. We can’t hold too many ideas on our brain simultaneously, so it is important that we write them on a piece of paper. This will create a connection between our brain and specific idea. In fact, repeated writing session will allow us to memorize much more easily. Writing is an easy task to push a piece of information harder into the memory slots inside our brain. After the class is over, we should write all the essential concepts and details, especially those that we lack proper understanding. We should do this continuously until we really are able to understand all the snippets of information.
