Earrings are one of those seemingly minor details that can actually completely make an outfit. You can find a great dress, a great suit, or the perfect jeans and top, and the right earrings can transform it from looking good, to looking completely polished and amazing. Of course, the wrong earrings can have the reverse effect too, making an outfit look dated or over the top. Here are some tips for picking the right ones for your outfit.
Don’t Wear the Same Earrings with Everything!
Some people tend to keep certain items of jewelry on at all times, for example a watch or a chain. This is OK with things that go with everything, but in the case of earrings is not a good idea. While it may seem like a simple way to keep your holes open, there aren’t really any styles of earring that work with every style of dress. Plain studs do to a point, but even they will be metal or a stone that won’t go with literally anything, and they can be too boring and understated with a lot of clothes. If you wear plain studs to sleep in or for general everyday wear with your normal work clothes and casual outfits, don’t leave earrings as an after thought when you dress up. Earrings are more noticeable than you think, so put as much attention into them when planning an outfit as you would your shoes, and don’t rely on one nice pair to see you through every occasion!
Work With Your Hair
If you have short hair or always wear your hair up, subtle earrings like studs or small hoops can be enough, and you can make a statement and give a dramatic impression by choosing big statement earrings with certain outfits. However, if your hair is long, thick and curly, then this will obscure smaller earrings and maybe even make you think your earrings aren’t worth wearing at all. In actual fact, women with long hair, no matter what the style or texture can still show off their earrings and have them complete their outfits, they just need to go for bolder styles. If you wear studs, choose bright stones or diamond stud earrings that catch the light and sparkle, rather than plain silver or gold balls. If you want a more glam look, choose crystal or gemstone drop styles, or big hoops.
Think About Color
As with anything else you do with accessories, earrings need to work, color wise, with the rest of the ensemble. Clear styles like crystal, glass and diamond work with neutral colors, black or white, and can go with most other shades however with something quite bland like denim you may want something that injects some color of its own, like turquoise or amethyst. Because earrings are close to your face, you should also try and coordinate your make up with them – this doesn’t mean making it match (blue eye-shadow with blue earrings, for example), as an exact match can look slightly odd, but making sure it compliments them, for example choosing cool make up colors with silver earrings and warm with gold.
