When most people think of braces, they think of being awkward, young and embarrassed. Even if you are an adult and realize that you are having an important dental correction, you may still be feeling a little nervous about the prospect. However, the truth is that wearing braces as an adult does not have to be nerve-wracking or embarrassing at all. Just consider these tips.
Don’t Mention It
Just don’t mention your braces. The truth is that if you are someone who generally speaks with your lips close together, you’ll find that a lot of people just won’t notice. Most people look each other in the eyes, not the mouth. Even if the braces are noticeable, chances are most people won’t notice or care if you have braces. Complaining or worrying about your braces will only focus the attention on them when they have gone unnoticed.
Explain Them
Be frank about it. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. You are putting in the effort for a stunning smile and to avoid oral pain later in life. Don’t be afraid to answer questions if people ask why you are getting orthodontic work. They may be considering braces themselves and want more information from an adult who has them.
Don’t Forget To Smile
Whether you are nervous or self-conscious about wearing braces or love it, don’t forget to smile. People will notice someone who doesn’t want to talk or keeps their mouth closed, looking angry. This isn’t the type of attention anyone wants. No matter how noticeable your braces may be, smiling will make you appear more friendly, happy and approachable.
Consider Lingual Braces
If you are really worried about being teased or about the impression you are making at work, which is a legitimate concern if you work in a position where you need to command automatic respect, consider getting lingual braces instead. These braces are set behind the teeth, allowing you to correct your teeth invisibly.
If you are thinking about moving towards getting your teeth fixed, don’t let anxiety stop you. There are a lot of things that you can do to confidently wear braces at any age.
