All children are not the same; therefore, it seems silly we expect them all to benefit from identical educations. While most kids do well in the traditional education system, others need something a bit different. They crave adventure, excitement, and unexpected ways to learn new things. For children who don’t just fit in to the traditional mold, here are just a few adventurous education options that could spark their curiosity for learning.
Outdoor Exploration
It’s a big, wide world out there, so why would you want to spend all your time in a classroom? There are plenty of classes and programs that encourage children to get outside. Some even hold classes outdoors (weather permitting, of course). If this seems like the sort of thing that would delight your child, see if any of the schools in your area have programs that all your children to get in touch with nature.
Study Abroad
Traveling on their own is a formative experience for most students, and it’s an opportunity your child should try and take advantage of. Study abroad places your child in a totally different culture and environment. They’ll have to think on their feet, learn to adapt, and take on a lot of responsibility. Investigate the options your school system offers and see if any spark your child’s thirst for adventure.
Boarding School
If your child has a strong independent streak (or you’d like them to develop one), boarding school is something to consider. The benefits of boarding school are vast and varied, from increased responsibility to a better idea of what they want their future to hold. It’s a big decision, but if you find the right boarding school for your child the possibilities could be endless.
Summer Camp
This isn’t your parent’s summer camp. While the traditional model for camps still exists (and thrives), a lot of students are looking for something a little more exciting. Has your child wanted to spend the summer learning about computer coding? What about swimming with dolphins, or learning to rock climb? Think a bit outside the box and look for unusual and fun activities that will expand your child’s world and imagination.
Internships
They’re essential for college and jobs, but an internship can be so much more than a stepping-stone to better things. Instead of chasing the traditional internships, look for something unexpected in the field that sparks your child’s interests. Let them spend a summer trying out something totally new and different. Even if they opt for a different career option they’ll walk away a little wiser and with a wealth of knew experiences.
Extracurricular Activities
Your child doesn’t have to travel far to have amazing educational adventures. Most towns have an assortment of activities that residents can get involved in – especially for children. Look at the local recreation center, or check out if there are any fun clubs your child might be interested in exploring. Remember, at the end of the day your child’s passions and hobbies should be the driving force regarding their education. Find what gets your child excited about learning, and take it from there!
