Have you ever found yourself lying awake at night and wondering why you can’t sleep? Every tick of your clock brings you closer to morning, and you try desperately to sleep because you know you need it. Your body needs time to repair itself, and you need to get some rest so that you’ll have enough energy the next day. You can’t just run on caffeine, right?
So, why can’t you fall asleep? There are many reasons why you are just tossing and turning on your bed at night. Here are a few that will hopefully help you understand your situation better.
1. Pain
Pain, even mild pain, can make you lose sleep. People need to be in a relaxed physical and mental state in order to sleep; and so, being uncomfortable will keep you awake. Oftentimes, those with chronic pain, kidney problems and cancer find it hard to sleep through the night. Other physical conditions that affect sleep include asthma and other breathing disorders, allergies, and acid reflux. Fortunately, there are certain types of mattresses that can help alleviate pain and promote comfort. But ultimately, choosing a mattress is a very personal thing. Still, if you are looking for a mattress that will help in lessening your aches and pains, find a mattress that will provide back support and comfort, like a memory foam. In case you suffer from asthma or other respiratory disorders, opt for a hypoallergenic bed. An adjustable bed, one which you can adjust to stay upright, is beneficial as well. This type of bed is also advantageous for those who experience acid reflux or heartburns at night.
2. Sleep Disorders
Insomnia is a common type of sleep disorder. A person who suffers from this cannot have a good night’s sleep. His body, however, will crave sleep during daytime. Insomnia is caused by a lot of things, including pain, stress, and poor sleep environment. If you have insomnia, look for a bed that’s comfortable to you. It will also help if you change your bedroom and make it more conducive to rest and sleep. For instance, you can turn the lights off or keep illumination dim. This will encourage your body to produce more melatonin, which initiates sleepiness. Create a good sleep environment by de-cluttering your space. Disorder and mess can indirectly influence your thoughts, which could lead to insomnia as well.
3. Bugs and Pets
You should be comfortable in bed so that you can sleep well. If you invite your pet dog or cat to sleep with you, you might not be able to sleep that well. It’s very likely that your animal will disrupt your slumber. If your mattress is ridden with insects, especially bed bugs, you’ll lose sleep too. Though bed bug bites only become itchy a day or two after you’re bitten, sleeping in a bug-ridden bed every night will definitely make you feel itchy all over after a while. Dust mites are also a problem. In case you have bug problems, have your old mattress treated or buy a new one. Avoid innerspring mattresses too because bugs can easily live in the void within. Choose foam or other more dense types of mattresses.
